Boat Preparation Before the Season: What to Check Before Your First Trip

Before the boating season starts, it is smart to make a basic check of your boat and equipment. This can prevent unpleasant situations at sea, unnecessary costs and lost time once the season begins.
Preparation does not have to be complicated. Focus on a few key areas: hull, engine, ropes, fenders, safety equipment and maintenance products.
Hull and Antifouling Protection
The hull should be checked for damage, scratches, signs of osmosis or worn protection. If the boat has spent a long time in the sea, the antifouling layer may be less effective.
Regular hull maintenance supports better performance, lower fuel consumption and easier cleaning during the season.
Engine and Basic Consumables
Before the season, check:
- oil and filters
- impeller
- hoses
- battery condition
- cooling system
- fuel and connections
Rubber impellers, hoses and other consumable parts are often inexpensive, but they can cause major problems if neglected.
Ropes, Fenders and Mooring Equipment
Ropes should be undamaged, without serious wear and strong enough for the conditions in which the boat is moored. Fenders should be properly inflated, positioned and matched to the size of the boat.
If you use fender covers, check that they are clean, undamaged and properly fitted to the fender model.
